Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is exactly what we wanted in a Mando movie, nothing more, nothing less. If you have ever watched the TV series and thought to yourself, I wonder how this would look on the big screen; well now is your chance. Think of it as an extended 2-hour episode full of Star Wars adventure.

SYNOPSIS: Once a lone bounty hunter, Mandalorian Din Djarin and his apprentice Grogu embark on an exciting new Star Wars adventure. | PG-13

Do you need to watch the series first?

Short answer is, no. Luckily you get enough of a backstory that the plot is easy to follow, and it all makes sense. The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) contracts work for the New Republic bringing in bad guys. Grogu is his adopted son, and somewhat of an apprentice. Anything else unfolds as it moves along. If you have seen the Disney Plus series you will have a deeper joy seeing all your favorite characters on the big screen.

OG Star Wars fans will love the fact that that Hutts are at the center of this story as well. Mando and Grogu’s current mission includes doing a favor for the Hutt Twins who have taken over the crime world since the death of Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars Episode V. The twins have info concerning Lord Janu (Jonny Coyne), who the New Republic is currently chasing. The twins are willing to supply information if Mando will first rescue their nephew – Jabba’s son – Rotta the Hutt (Jeremy Allen White). If it were all only that simple. Bottom line: never trust a Hutt.

Like the series this one allows Grogu to supply a lot of cute humor, while Mando does most of the fighting. Grogu does some “heavy lifting” as well though do to his skills in the force. I love that his origin and true purpose have never been fleshed out too much. We just know that Grogu is special, with some high end force juice. If he even knows what he is capable of he is not sharing. If adorable was a super power he would be untouchable.

Even on the big screen this one feels like a series episode. That is not a negative point. In fact the opposite. I appreciate that what we know and love about the series is all there. It is safe to say that some of the elements are bigger and better, and the fight scenes more intense. You will most assuredly get your moneys worth.

There are some big names in this one both physically and through voice acting. it is obvious that everyone wants to be in the Star Wars universe. Sigourney Weaver, Martin Scorsese – yes that Martin Scorsese – are in this one. Weaver is no stranger to dealing with Aliens. I am not sure she is the best fit for the character of Colonel Ward but, I am not mad at it either. Martin is the fun surprise, and as soon as you hear his voice it makes the casting perfect.

Should you see it on the big screen?

See it on the big screen for sure. I can’t wait for this one to hit Disney Plus, and it will be watched many times by fans of the Mando franchise. Though not as large in scale it is easily as fun and entertaining as any of the last three Star Wars films; and more rewatchable.

Are you only there for Grogu?

No doubt the creators know who the real star is here. If you care nothing of SW lore or the guy in the suit. If you are only there for the cute little green guy, you will have plenty to enjoy. Grogu has a reputation of being a “baaaad Baby” and he gets into some harmless shenanigans here. Especially when it comes to snacks and buttons. But we can’t forget that Grogu is strong in the force and there are some powerful, heartfelt moments with him and Mado as well. So yes, there is much to ooohh and ahhh over with this one.

BOTTOM LINE. Entertaining, Great characters. Very Star Wars. Fast Paced. Beautifully shot. 4/5 Stars
