Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings” stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy, with Michelle Yeoh as Ying Nan, and Tony Leung as Xu Wenwu, Shang-Chi’s father; as well as Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Yuen Wah, Ronny Chieng, Zach Cherry, and Dallas Liu.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is constantly expanding, and the addition of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a step in the right direction. It is the 2nd film in the MCU’s Phase Four following Black Widow. Two other Marvel films are slated to release later in 2021. ETERNALS and SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME.
To state it simply, this film is a lot of fun from start to finish. Arguably one of the most beautifully shot Marvel films with stunning choreography and fight sequences. Most films in this genre rely on fast motion and quick edits. Shang-Chi allows its movements to flow vividly giving the viewer a dance-like motion. Do not mistake this decision as a lack of action though. This thing packs a serious punch.
Simi Liu plays Shaun/Shang-Chi. I liked him in this role. If I have to be picky about anything it is that he looks way older than the character he is portraying. I do not know why that bothered me-but it did. He is very comfortable in the role whether fighting with mystical powers or goofing around with his best friend Katy (Awkwafina). Awkwafina is hilarious – as always – with her special blend of humor. She never as to take the crude route to get a laugh but relies more on timing and good natured ribbing. She is the perfect side kick for Shaun.
The rest of the cast fit nicely into the story line. This is a very Asian film which accounts for its stunning visuals, alluring story, and jaw dropping martial arts. Although a very personal journey for Shang-Chi and his family it still weaves into the MCU. In fact see some other more familiar faces in this one. They are brief but there to remind us the world in which they live.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, and language. I give it a solid 4 out of 5. Perfect for the Marvel fans and those who like perfectly done action films.
