Synopsis: As a nurse practitioner in an emergency room, Monica has given her all to her job and prides herself on her track record of not going on vacation. Monica’s new boss has a different perspective on the situation and encourages her to take some time away as it will help invigorate her. At her mother’s urging, Monica heads to Spain to join a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago, just as her parents had done many years ago. Equipped with the final gift she received from her late father – a devotional featuring scripture passages and daily prompts to help guide her and clear her mind – Monica begins to appreciate the slower, more deliberate pace of the Camino. She forges relationships with her fellow pilgrims including Luis (Eric Valdez), a divorced father traveling with his teen son and his father. As their Camino progresses, Monica finds herself on a journey to self-discovery that ultimately brings her closer to God and helps her realize what she really wants in life. And as Monica reaches the emotional end point of this trek, she learns something surprising about her parents’ own pilgrimage that will have a lasting effect on her as she steps into her post-Camino life.
If Hallmark films are anything they are consistent. They are a reminder of what is important, how to be in the moment, and to discover something inside of you that you may have forgotten. A JOURNEY TO YOU is a film about all of those things as it takes us through beautiful landscapes mixed with inspiring dialogue. Monica (Erin Cahill) reluctantly heads to Spain for a walk that she sees as something else to conquer. Along the way she learns that the journey often has ideas of its own. Her traveling companions include a guide as well as a Grandfather, Father, and Son searching for something as well. Could there be love on this journey too? Spoiler alert, it is Hallmark.
Monica’s journey may be the main one, but her walking pals also have a lot to find and bond over as well. Watching three generation of men struggle to connect, let go, and speak truth is a powerful element that adds to the film. It reminds us that as a family we are much the same but there are subtle differences to be explored and uncovered. And it those differences that will shape us and bring use closer than ever imagined.
Watching five people walk the countryside may not seem like a riveting thing to watch, but the dialogue and reflection make it easy to engage with. With the range of characters and generations everyone will find someone to relate to. Whether you are starting your own journey in life or have much of it already behind you, this film will encourage you in some way and help you find purpose in the pain.
