Commentary: Oh lord this movie. I can’t begin to explain everything that went wrong with DieRy. And I hate having to say that. A lot of time and money and energy from very talented people went in to making it. No one set out to make a bad movie. But there are times when nothing comes together and the script is all over the place. The concept in this was solid but it was all told in vague, uncompleted sentences.

The premise is about an “Instagram Model” – are there such things? – who has a diary. It is stolen and she begins to get notes from someone claiming to be the person responsible. Then people she has contact with start being murdered. The rest is a hot mess of random characters each of whom have dialogue that contradicts the rest of the story. The plot tries so hard to be thrilling and mysterious. But never is. It feels like every scene was written the day of shooting with no memory of the scene before it. That is the best way I can describe it.

One example. The main character is getting a masters degree in comparative religion and has a best friend who is into cult-like thinking. Concepts and traits that would have been fun to play with.  None of that every enters into the story. Ever. She could have been a business major, or a cheerleader, or a ballerina. It would have made no difference. So much time was taken to create these elaborate and intricate character concepts for what? It was a waste of time.

The actors can’t be held responsible. They can only say what they are told. Some are very over the top to the point of reinventing cliche. I don’t ant to spend much more time talking about this movie. It is that bad. I give it a D- and hope that lessons were learned.
