For better or for worse THE DRAMA is a crazy ride

For better or for worse THE DRAMA is a crazy ride. Creative dialogue coupled with powerhouse performances by its two leads make this a must see for fans of, well, drama. Dark undertones make even the bits of comedy tense. If you are looking for a feel good rom-com this is not it. But if it is love unhinged you desire; please step right up.

Synopsis: A happily-engaged couple is put to the test when an unexpected turn sends their wedding week off the rails. | 1h 45m | Rated R for sexual content, some violent/bloody images, language throughout, and brief drug use.

The poster and trailer are fairly open about the fact that this couple is not where they wanted to be the day of the wedding. But what possibly could have caused them to self destruct the week of the wedding after the rest of their time together was bliss? The answer to that question is the make or break point of the story. We have seen thousands of wedding jitter nuptials. Couples with cold feet. Quirky misunderstandings that leave us hoping all will be made known. This one uses none of the textbook, cliche arcs to move its characters along.

Emma (Zendaya) and Charlie (Robert Pattinson) are a cute couple. How they meet is cute. How they interact is cute. They even have cute names. It only makes sense that they would have the cutest, sweetest wedding ever. End of story. Happily ever after. All that stuff. But one night over drinks with their best friends some secrets are shared in a sort of “never have I ever” moment that sends not only the couple but those around them reeling.

The rest of the film revolves around Emma and Charlie trying to come to terms with a devastating truth. The audience as well is left pondering the issue brought to life. It will certainly spark conversation which is exactly what a film like this should do. And there are no easy answers. No hard right and wrong. In fact for those who could easily dismiss the truth the film may seem more a “what’s the big deal” than a powerful journey.

At first the thought of Zendaya and Pattinson as a couple had me shaking my head. Opposites attract but I did not have them on my bingo card at all. They are both incredible performers and what we get here is top tier acting from both. So much of the success of the film is riding on not just their chemistry but their ability to fight, argue, and try to come to terms with what is presented. We get smashing results from both.

The story is also a blatant reminder that not everything needs confessed and shared. Dark secrets and alcohol is never a great mix even with those you feel like would have your back no matter what. Live and learn people. Skeletons need stayed buried for a reason. If it isn’t a priest or a lawyer; zip it.

THE DRAMA is better than I expected being it is not what I expected at all.
